If you are visiting the Netherlands this then you probably want to explore the country. There are many ways to do this but our favorite method is hiring a car and driving around. This method is more independent and allows you to explore the area at your own pace. Our day trips list will consist of well known attractions but some lesser known places can be interesting too.
Many of these attractions will allow you to explore them on your own, some sites require you to book in advance. You can also book activities on the day. This is a great way to see an area of the country you are visiting in your own time. You get to experience the area as the locals do.
Other methods of transportation can include a canal cruise, a bus ride or a train. All of these can help you explore the area of the country you are visiting. This can make your day more eventful and give you more options.
Here are a few of the attractions which we have visited on a day excursion from Haarlem.
1. Keukenhof
Keukenhof is one of the most famous flower auctions in the world and a must visit location for anyone visiting the Netherlands. Located just outside haarlem, it is well worth a visit.
Keukenhof provides many different forms of entertainment for people of all ages. There is a theater, a petting zoo, children’s rides, greenhouses. With so many attractions and things to do it is well worth a visit.
2. Zaanse Schans
Zaanse Schans is village located in Holland. It is located around 30km from haarlem. It is one of the places that is most recognised from the Netherlands.
You can visit here by walking around and visiting the shops and homes. The houses and shops are all painted with the shades of Dutch blue. The houses are real, many have been restored and date back to the 17th century.
One attraction includes a full reconstruction of a traditional Dutch village.

3. Wilhelminapark
Wilhelminapark is a large park in the city of Utrecht. It is one of the largest parks in the Netherlands and covers an area of 15km.
It is a green oasis within the city of Utrecht. There is a children’s playground and people run, cycle and walk its many paths.
4. Utrecht Zoo
Utrecht Zoo is a beautiful zoo located 15 minutes away from haarlem. Located alongside the river, the zoo has giraffes, lions, penguins and elephants. There is a wide range of animals to see.
It is a great place for the kids and the parents can enjoy it just as much as the kids.
5. Rotterdamshaven
Rotterdamshaven is a harbour located at the city side of the river. There is a large marina area and a waterfront promenade. This is a great place to walk around and take in the sights.
6. Luchtsingel
Luchtsingel is the perfect destination for those looking for a unique and relaxing experience. This 3.5km long canal walkway in Utrecht can be accessed easily, whether it’s by walking, cycling, or taking a bus. Luchtsingel has many enticing activities on offer.
From shopping in the various stores to dining out in one of its restaurants and cafes, there is something here for everyone. Luchtsingel provides an idyllic setting to while away the hours while surrounded with stunning scenery and beautiful views; ideal for tourists or locals who wish to escape from their daily lives.
7. Utrechts Dom
Utrechts Dom is a famous cathedral in Utrecht. It was founded in 1226 and is a National Monument. It is very modern and unique. The ceiling is illuminated by millions of LED lights. There is much to see and do in this cathedral. There is a museum of church art, an octagonal hall with stained glass windows and a place to read, relax and eat.
