Gettysburg is a small borough located in south-central Pennsylvania, about 100 miles northwest of Baltimore and 75 miles southwest of Philadelphia. The town is most famous as the site of the Battle of Gettysburg, which was fought from July 1-3, 1863, and is considered to be the turning point of the American Civil War.

In the months leading up to the battle, Confederate General Robert E. Lee had been leading his army on a series of successful campaigns in Virginia. In June 1863, he decided to take the war into Northern territory in the hopes of winning a decisive victory that would force the Union to sue for peace.

Lee’s army invaded Pennsylvania, and on July 1 they clashed with a Union force at the town of Gettysburg. Over the course of three days, some 50,000 soldiers were killed or wounded in what was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.

In November 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address at the dedication of a national cemetery for those who had fallen in battle.

Today, Gettysburg is a popular tourist destination, and visitors can tour the battlefields, visit museums, and see many other historical sites related to the Civil War.
